Seafood Intolerance Information

A seafood intolerance is when a person feels negative symptoms after eating seafood. Seafood intolerances can vary greatly between different people. In some cases a person will be unable to eat at types of seafood without experiencing symptoms. Other people will have issues consuming some types of seafood but they will be able to eat other types without any negative response. The “seafood” category is very large and encompasses any form of sea life that is regarded as food by humans. Seafood intolerances may affect those who eat fish (salmon, bass, halibut, cod, etc.), crustaceans (such as crab, lobster and shrimp) or a variety of other types of seafood.

Seafood intolerance symptoms typically appear several hours after a person eats seafood or other foods that contain seafood. In some cases, however, this delay can be last up to a day or more. Each person will experience seafood intolerance symptoms in a different way and the delay between eating the food in question and experiencing the symptoms will be different for each person.

It is important to note that a seafood intolerance is NOT a seafood allergy. In the case of a seafood allergy, symptoms are often immediate, rather than the delayed symptoms that occur with a seafood intolerance. In addition, seafood allergy symptoms are often much more severe than intolerance symptoms. In some cases, allergy symptoms can even be life-threatening. With a seafood intolerance, symptoms are less severe and they are not life-threatening. Instead, seafood intolerance symptoms make day-to-day life difficult, painful or uncomfortable for a person.

As people will experience a variety of different symptoms with a seafood intolerance and since there is a delay between eating the offending food and experiencing these symptoms, some people have difficult determining what is actually causing their issues without assistance.

What is a Seafood Intolerance?



Food intolerances can either be digestive intolerances or immune intolerances. An immune food intolerance causes the body to respond to certain foods with an immune response. A digestive food intolerance is a situation where a person has difficulty or is unable to properly digest, absorb or process seafood or certain types of seafood.

Each person with a food intolerance will have different symptoms that will vary from person-to-person. The delay between eating the offending food and experiencing the symptoms, the severity of the symptoms and their duration will also depend on the individual.

Digestive Seafood Intolerance Symptoms



With an immune food intolerance, a person will feel unwell after eating the offending food. However, these feelings will be very individual. They will feel an immune response that will vary greatly between different people.

With a digestive food intolerance, symptoms vary as well. However, there are some digestive seafood intolerance symptoms that are more common than others. Digestive seafood intolerance symptoms include stomach pain, cramping, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, bloating and other similar symptoms. People with seafood intolerances may also experience fatigue, headaches, soreness and other issues.

The delay between eating seafood and experiencing seafood intolerance symptoms is typically several hours. However, in some cases, the delay can be as long as a day or more. This will depend on the individual.

Seafood Intolerance Treatment



A person with a seafood intolerance can avoid experiencing symptoms by removing seafood from his or her diet. This usually does not need to be a permanent change. In many cases, a person will be able to return to eating seafood at a later date without having the food intolerance symptoms return. This should be done under the advice of a medical professional.

There are a number of health benefits to consuming seafood, so a person with a seafood intolerance should note which nutrients may be missing from his or her diet after deciding to stop consuming seafood. In particular, many types of seafood contain Omega-3 which is known to assist in heart health, brain development and eyesight. Many types of seafood are also high in protein as well as a number of different vitamins and minerals.

A person who is avoiding seafood should also take note of all labels and ingredient lists on food. Some unexpected foods may contain seafood or be prepared with seafood. You will need to ask questions at restaurants as well.
