Green Tea Intolerance Information

A green tea intolerance is a situation where a person experiences negative symptoms after consuming green tea. A person can have either a digestive green tea intolerance or an immune green tea intolerance. The symptoms of a green tea intolerance are not immediate. This is one aspect that separates them from a food allergy. With a green tea intolerance, it can take several hours or, in some cases, up to a day or more before symptoms are apparent.

Another way in which a green tea intolerance is different from an allergy is that green tea intolerance symptoms are much less severe than allergy symptoms. They are not life-threatening, but instead they cause discomfort and can make life difficult for people.

What is a Green Tea Intolerance?

Green tea is a type of tea made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. Green tea is different from black and oolong tea as it contains dried and steamed leaves that have not been fermented. Some people are unable to drink green tea without experiencing negative symptoms. If these symptoms are delayed and not life-threatening, this is called a green tea intolerance. There are two types of food intolerances: digestive and immune.

Some people with green tea intolerances are able to drink a small amount of green tea or to eat a small amount of food that has green tea as an ingredient. Others are unable to eat or drink anything that contains green tea or similar foods.

In addition, as green tea contains some caffeine, certain people who have caffeine intolerances or caffeine sensitivities may experience symptoms after consuming green tea. The likelihood of this occurring increases with the amount of green tea that is consumed. A caffeine intolerance leads to negative symptoms after consuming any food or drink that contains caffeine.

As with all food intolerances, green tea intolerances are highly individual. Some people who have a green tea intolerance will experience symptoms of a greater severity and/or for a longer amount of time than others. The types of symptoms that are experienced will differ as well.

Digestive Green Tea Intolerance Symptoms

With a digestive green tea intolerance, common symptoms include stomach pain, cramping, bloated feelings, excessive gas, nausea and vomiting. These symptoms can occur several hours after consuming the offending food but, with certain people, the symptoms can be delayed by up to a day.

If a person has an immune food intolerance, their symptoms will be very individual.

Green Tea Intolerance Treatment

People with a green tea intolerance or those with a caffeine sensitivity will find they they can eliminate their intolerance symptoms by removing the offending foods from their diets. As green tea is a very specific food, it is often quite easy to remove it from a diet without much issue. However, green tea does have certain health benefits.

In general, green tea is a good source of antioxidants which help you body’s cells fight the effects of free radicals. If you cannot drink green tea, you should ensure that you find other sources of antioxidants.

In many cases, you will not need to remove the offending foods from your diet permanently. With a food intolerance, you can remove the food for a period of time and then, at a later time, you can reintroduce it to your diet. This should be done on the advice of a medical professional.
