Garlic Intolerance Information A garlic intolerance is when a person experiences a negative symptoms after eating garlic or food that contains garlic. Garlic intolerance symptoms are often delayed and can take hours or, in some cases, up to a day or more to appear. Different people experience garlic intolerances in different ways. As with all food intolerances, garlic intolerance symptoms are highly individual. A garlic intolerance is not the same as a garlic allergy. Allergy symptoms are usually much more immediate that intolerance symptoms. In most cases they are also much more severe. A person with a garlic allergy can sometimes experience life-threatening symptoms after eating garlic. Food intolerance symptoms are not life threatening. They instead make life difficult for those who have a garlic intolerance by causing pain, discomfort and other issues. The amount of garlic that causes negative symptoms varies from person-to-person as well. Some people are able to eat small amounts of garlic or garlic that has been prepared in certain ways. These people may not experience any symptoms if there is a small amount of garlic on their food, for example, but they will experience symptoms for larger amounts. Other people will only experience issues when eating raw garlic. However, some people will encounter negative issues upon eating any amount of garlic, regardless of how it is prepared. This is another way in which a garlic intolerance is very individual.

What is a Garlic Intolerance?

A garlic intolerance is when a person is experiences negative symptoms after eating garlic. A garlic intolerance can be either digestive or immune. A person with a digestive garlic intolerance will have issues with digesting or absorbing garlic or any of the properties of garlic. A person with an immune intolerance will instead respond with an immune response.

Certain people have intolerances to allicin, fructan and/or sulphur, which are all present in garlic. These issues can cause a person to experience negative feelings or symptoms after eating garlic.

If you have a garlic intolerance, you may experience a wide variety of different symptoms after eating garlic.

Digestive Garlic Intolerance Symptoms

Each person with a garlic intolerance will experience symptoms differently. Those with immune garlic intolerances will have very highly individualized symptoms. People with immune intolerances will feel unwell, but each individual will manifest the negative feelings differently.

With a digestive garlic intolerance, common symptoms include stomach pain, cramping, excessive gas, changes in bowel movements, diarrhea, constipation, bloating and a number of other issues. These garlic intolerance symptoms typically take several hours to appear but, in some people, the delay between eating garlic and experiencing negative feelings can be delayed by up to a day or more.

Digestive garlic intolerance symptoms also vary from person-to-person. Each person may not experience all of the symptoms listed above. In addition, these severity of the symptoms will differ.

The variety of symptoms, the delay between eating the offending food and the fact that symptoms vary from person-to-person can sometimes make it difficult for a person to know that he or she has a garlic intolerance without assistance.

Garlic Intolerance Treatment

A person with a garlic intolerance can stop experiencing garlic intolerance symptoms by removing garlic and foods that contain garlic from his or her diet. However, this can sometimes be difficult. Garlic is present in a wide variety of different foods, both as a main ingredient and as a way to add flavor.

For some people, both fresh and powdered garlic cause issues as well as both raw and cooked garlic. People who are unable to eat any types of garlic without experiencing garlic intolerance symptoms will need to pay close attention to the foods that they eat. Many foods are prepared with garlic salt or garlic powder. Outside of the obvious foods, some foods that contain garlic in some form include pasta sauces, soups, crackers, frozen meals and many other processed food. Garlic salt is also frequently used as a seasoning on any foods.

A person with a garlic intolerance will need to read food labels very carefully in order to ensure that he or she is not eating any garlic. When dining out, it is important to make it known that you have a garlic intolerance and to specify that you would like to have your meal prepared without garlic. Being honest and asking questions will ensure that you do not accidentally eat garlic.
