Keep Calories in Mind with Fall Drinks

Posted on Sep 09, 2014 0 comments

Fall is almost here, school is back in session and pumpkin spice everything is filling the shelves. However, it’s important to note that while many fall-themed drinks (such as lattes, coffee drinks and other beverages) are often extremely tasty, a lot of them are also very high in calories. Many people don`t think about the calories in the drinks they consume, but these calories can quickly add up if you`re not careful!

Drinks like flavoured lattes and hot chocolates often contain a great deal of sugar, which isn’t good for your health. The syrups that give many of these drinks their flavouring is filled with sugar, making the drinks incredibly sweet. This point becomes especially true if you add things like whip cream to your drink. In fact, a pumpkin spice latte can contain between 25 and 62g of sugar, depending on the size and whether or not you add whipped cream. That`s a lot!

Many fall specialty beverages are also very high in calories. For example, a typical pumpkin spice latte from a coffee shop can have between 300 and 400 calories. You`ll need to keep this in mind when ordering.

Are You Eating Too Much Sugar?

Sometimes it can seem impossible to keep track of all of the ingredients you eat in a day. Time is short and ingredient lists are long. To make things worse, in some cases - such as with the food at many restaurants - ingredient lists are not easily available. In other cases, the names of the ingredients are confusing or complicated. This means we sometimes end up eating food that contains ingredients we’re not quite sure of.

However, it’s important to pay attention to the ingredients that are in your food. One ingredient that you should take note of is sugar. A lot of foods that you wouldn’t expect actually contain quite a lot of sugar and too much sugar can be a problem. Eating too much sugar can cause weight gain, health problems, diabetes, tooth decay and a number of other issues.

However, it’s often tough to spot sugar in many foods as sugar goes by many different names. Some of these sugars are natural sugars while others are processed sugars.

The Calories in your Drinks

Many people keep track of the calories in the foods that they eat, but it’s also important to recognize that many drinks have far more calories than you would expect. For example, the average can of cola has approximately 150 calories in it. If you consume three cans of cola in a day, that’s 450 or nearly a quarter of the calories you should eat on a 2000 calorie diet.

But soda pop is just one of the drinks you have to watch out for. Other beverages contain far more calories and you may not even realize it. A medium café latte from a coffee shop can contain anywhere between 250 and 350 calories, depending on the type of milk and syrups added to the drink. For comparison, that’s about the same number of calories as a small French fries from a fast food restaurant.

The hot weather is here! While you’re out and about enjoying the summer, it’s very important that you stay hydrated. Whether you’re having some fun in the sun or working on a hot summer day, it’s certainly crucial that you get enough hydration. Failure to do so can result in heat exhaustion or worse.
It’s also very important to make the right choices with your drinks. Water is obviously your best choice. It’s an excellent way to stay cool, refreshed and hydrated and it doesn’t contain any calories. Many other drinks contain a large number of calories, not to mention a great deal of sugar, sodium and other additives that can be bad for your health.
Always read the label before you drink something.
